The internet is a treasure chest of useful information- but it also a minefield of cat memes, twitter feuds and videos of people falling over. Which is why sometimes it can be useful to have a guide to keep you on track to the areas of the net that are going to help you and your business. As Content Marketing Manager for Nosto, part of my role is to run the Nosto blog (where you find yourself now) – to do this I have to be aware of what is going on in the ecommerce world, the good, the bad and the ugly. This means I constantly read, watch and listen to keep abreast of things. So, here I have compiled a list of my favorite ecommerce blogs – I hope it helps you surf the web for success (at which point you can reward yourself with a cat meme or two…).

In no particular order…

1. ConversionXL

All hail Peep Laja, founder of ConversionXL! For what he and his team don’t know about eco
mmerce websites and making them do their job (well) isn’t worth knowing. Put it this way, if ecommerce websites were cars then a visit to this blog would be the equivalent of a trip to the mechanic, teaching you how to constantly tweak, fix and optimize your store for it’s primary objection; conversion. The pieces tend to be long-form which means they give you an extensive view on every subject they cover- they are also stat filled and often based on research, giving you  cold hard facts rather than opinion. A nice little extra feature is that the ConversionXL website allows you to choose your knowledge level to provide you with the most relevant content (well, working for a personalization company this was always going to impress me…)

One of my favorites: How Habits Are Sabotaging Your Conversions (and How to Fix It)…’
If, like me, you are interested in not just what people do but why they do it (especially in relation to your business) then this is a great read- looking at the psychological drivers behind habit formation and how this practice can both break or boost your business.

2. Shopify TGIM Podcasts

One for the auditory learners. In February this year Shopify launched a new podcast series- ‘TGIM’ (Thank God it’s Monday). It is aimed specifically at those people who can’t wait for the week to begin – we are, of course, talking about entrepreneurs. Why should you listen? Because although the series is in it’s infancy we have already heard some huge names (such as marketing God Seth Godin) and interesting and alternative topics (such a lessons from prison). Not only that but, in line with the needs of the busy entrepreneur, the podcasts are available in bite size short versions as well so that you can squeeze them in between meetings.

One of my favorites: ‘Embracing Failure
One of the shorts on offer, this mini-podcast looks at the inherent value of failure. A worthwhile listen for anyone in the business world (or, indeed, anyone generally).

3. Practical Ecommerce

A blog that is not only, as the name highlights, practical but also consistent and varied which is why it is a personal favorite of mine. Covering ecommerce from all angles, including conversion, marketing and design – you are guaranteed to find something that is not only interesting, but useful to your business on every visit. And really, what more can you ask for than that?

One of my favorites: ’26 Free SEO Tools for Merchants’
As a writer and a marketer, I know the challenges of SEO all too well- which is why I love this post. Any tool that will demystify the art of SEO, to me, is something I want to know about – and here you have 26 of them. If that’s not practical, I don’t know what is!

4. KISSmetrics

I’m not sure where the KISS in KISSmetrics comes from (I did look but to no avail – so answers on a postcard please) but I can tell you that sometimes you will feel like kissing the writers of this blog. Although, I am sure they would rather you continue to read and share their content instead. Again, as the name would suggest, KISSmetrics is analytics driven but that in no way means that their content is lackluster or difficult to read- expect interesting topics, covered in an engaging and useful manner. Oh, and their infographics are particularly good!

One of my favorites: Infographic– ‘Brand Unawareness’
Helping you learn from the mistakes of others, this infographic gives examples of brand blunders on social media and explains what the lessons we should take from them. Entertaining? Yes. But also useful.

5. Econsultancy blog

In my opinion the Econsultancy blog should be a daily read for anyone and everyone in the ecommerce sector. You want to keep your finger on the pulse of this industry? Then this is the place to go- not only is it prolific (with pieces coming out every few hours) but is also super topical, even finding ecommerce lessons in news that doesn’t in anyway seem ecommerce related (see my suggestion below). It is my go-to news source and one of the sites from which I most often share content with my team. If it’s not covered here- then it probably hasn’t happened yet!

One of my favorites: ‘The social strategy behind Kim Kardashian’s #InternationalWomensDay nude tweets’. Bet you weren’t expecting a blog about Kim Kardashian’s nude photos to appear on here were you? Which is exactly why I like this piece. Topical and unexpected – it teaches ecommerce professionals what they can learn from the world around them (however odd the source of inspiration may be!).

And finally, a little shout-out for our very own Nosto blog…

Because I really do believe that the people in our company have some excellent, actionable advice to share! But don’t take my word for it – explore the blog for yourself (I recommend the mini blog series on the perfect product page from Lari, Head of Support).

I hope this these sources serve you as well as they do me. If you have any ecommerce blogs you would recommend please let me know in the comments!
