What’s new in Nosto: Recommendation Extensions for Shopify brands
Have you ever gone to pay for something in a shop and noticed the small shelves of items conveniently placed by the tills? I’m sure we’ve all picked up a few in our time!
It’s no coincidence these pieces are sitting right by the checkout. It’s this very moment that shoppers’ purchase intentions are at an all-time high.
Quite like with physical stores, your ecommerce checkout presents the perfect upselling opportunity. And thanks to our newly-released Recommendation Extensions, Shopify merchants can now make the most of this.
With this new update, Shopify brands can now apply Nosto Product Recommendations to the Checkout and Thank You pages of their stores, creating more revenue-generating opportunities.

The obvious benefit of applying Product Recommendations to Checkout and Thank You pages is the uplift in AOV.
Whether you’re highlighting the matching sports bra to a shopper about to purchase a pair of leggings, or recommending a leather protector to someone buying some new suede shoes—the reality is, people at checkout are more willing to buy additional items than people who are still browsing your store.
The less obvious benefit? Well that’s the decrease in customer risk. Naturally, shoppers have a more positive checkout experience when a brand anticipates their needs (i.e. the need for additional, complementary items to what they’re buying). By proactively surfacing suggested products throughout the checkout, you’re eliminating the need for shoppers to go back and search for these items to potentially not return.
Getting started
Now, let’s dive into how you can get Recommendation Extensions set up in both Nosto and Shopify.
Setting up in Nosto
For all eligible merchants (i.e., those on Shopify using Nosto’s Product Recommendations module), Nosto will automatically create default recommendations for Shopify Checkout and Thank You pages. Please note that for Checkout page recommendations, due to Shopify limitations, these are only available for Plus merchants.
First things first: Have a quick check of the settings to make sure they align with your business needs:
- Log into your Nosto account
- Go to Product Experience Cloud > Recommendations
- Check the pre-created recommendations for Shopify Checkout and Thank You Page
- Customize the recommendation settings to use algorithms that best match your business strategy
- Save and publish any updates
Setting up in Shopify
Heading over to Shopify, follow these simple steps to get set up:
- Log into Shopify Admin
- Go to Settings > Checkout
- Click Customize to open the Theme Editor
- Add Nosto App Blocks:
- Nosto Checkout (for Checkout Page)
- Nosto Thank-You (for Thank You Page)
- Drag and drop the blocks into your preferred location
- Save and Publish your changes
And just like that—your recommendations are now live and kicking on your Shopify Checkout and Thank You pages!
